  • Homemade cinema: The movies of real memories

Recently, I watched two movies Elisha and I made during our recent travel to San Francisco. The recordings I made using a borrowed camcorder are among the most valuable of our souvenirs from the trip since they will serve as a real reminder of our honeymoon memories.
  • Holiday portraits are nerve-racking

I can’t believe the holiday season is already here. It’s time to start planning annual holiday social gatherings, writing letters to Santa Claus and doing all the other stuff that we think is necessary this time of year.
  • Riley’s obsessive irrationality with the gambling quagmire

While we have been strolling down memory lane reminiscing about our past governor’s races, the ever-present electronic bingo issue has been percolating around the Goat Hill scene. As always, our current governor, Bob Riley, has engrossed himself into the issue.
  • Moderation is key to many problems

When does it usually hurt the worse? While there is little in life that is absolute, in most cases, the hurt follows the dismissal of moderation. We do a lot of fun and enjoyable things that can easily leave us with feelings of comfort, if we know when to say enough is enough.
  • All the preparations have been made

Times have changed since I was an expectant father and I believe that is good. Now I haven’t always thought that change was good, but in this instance I must concur it was. What I am making reference to is my being invited to a baby shower. I knew I was going to get an invitation for the shower since No. 1 had cautioned me about the shower several weeks ago and told me this was a “co-ed” affair and the parents of the expectant father and mother would be invited.
  • Operation Thanksgiving is a great outreach program

I’ve been accused in the past of being a tad bit harsh on local churches from time to time. I have to admit that’s true. I have been quick to point out areas where I think the local church has came up short, and where all of us (myself included) have missed the mark when it comes to being the church Jesus Christ called us to be.
  • Pain of sacrifice replaced by pleasure of having sacrificed

This past weekend when Elisha and I had a yard sale at my old apartment to get rid of some of the belongings that became unnecessary when we got married this summer, I realized it was not only time to say goodbye to our duplicate items. It was also time to say farewell to the duplex where I lived for the last year.
  • Crocodiles, snake highlight B-day fun

Children’s birthday parties can be pretty lame.
  • To live, we have to be willing to die

If looked at from every set of eyes, it probably would not be difficult to reach a conclusion that our national health care system is broken. Those who lack health insurance walk an unsteady tightrope. Those who have insurance are being strangled by ever-increasing premiums. Those who provide our health care deal with more restrictions, more frivolous lawsuits and more instances of non-payment.
  • No rhyme or reason for tragic acts

What possesses someone to kill 12 innocent people and wound 31 others on a military base? That question is one that you would hope a psychiatrist could answer. However, in this particular case, the psychiatrist is the one who did the shooting — so now where do you go for answers? There is no question it was a tragic incident occurring on the largest military base in the United States, Fort Hood, Texas. Major Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, walked into a Soldier Readiness Processing Center and opened fire on those assembled there.
