Members of Boy Scouts of America Cub Scout Pack 117 learned valuable lessons and helped members of their community Tuesday when they made a group donation to The Salvation Army.

“The kids learned how to give rather than receive,” said Scottie Waid, the Jasper pack’s cub master.

Before going to The Salvation Army Service on 20th Street in Jasper, the pack, the oldest chartered BSA troop and pack in the State of Alabama, collected donations of food to give to the non-profit organization for use in its food bank.

“I’m hoping they learned through that why we do so much for others,” said Waid who added that the exercise also helped build character.

“These young men are working hard to do their best and I am proud to be their leader,” said

Debbie Willcutt, the social service director of the Salvation Army food bank, gave the scouts a tour of the facility. “They had a good time,” she said.

Waid agreed. “They enjoyed doing it and they got to meet new people,” he said.

In the future, Waid said he hopes to have his cub scout troop hold a food drive twice a year. Eventually, he said he wants to raise donations for the Salvation Army quarterly.

He said he believes his scouts will be up for the challenge.

“Each of these young guys have such a giving heart and were so happy to be working and donating food to others through such a great organization as The Salvation Army. The Salvation Army helps hundreds of people here in Jasper,” Waid said.

Waid also lauded other the leaders of the pack, which includes assistant cub master Angie King and adult leaders Melissa Trotter, Brandy Waid, Heather Weeks, Waylon Godsey, David Samuels, Pam Herald and Barry Woodman.

“My leaders, here at Pack 117, have the responsibility of teaching our Cubbies a sense of worth, honor and a respect for others allowing them to have a strong foundation of service to others in there life, while being a child at heart,” Waid said.

“We pride ourselves in helping others, while having fun,” Waid said about his pack, adding the organization is always looking for new members.

“I am happy to say that Jasper has the honor of having several places that a young man or parent can be involved with Scouts,” he said. “We are located in the historic First United Methodist Church located downtown, Pack 10 is on the Trace, Pack 126 is at the Fair grounds, Pack 64 is located at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and Pack 94 is in Curry.  Each of us would like to welcome you to join the Cub Scouts, and find out what it can do for you.”

Pack 117 meets every Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Youth Center at the church.
