Floyd Norris, the owner of the Curry strip shopping center housing a new sheriff's substation, talks with Sheriff Nick Smith prior to the ribbon cutting for the facility Saturday afternoon. Norris said at the ceremony, "We need the sheriff here. We need their support. That's a good thing. We want to thank you for that."  Smith has opened up substations also in Sipsey and Townley, and wants to open up one later in the Parrish area. Sipsey has been used the most, about 60 to 70 times, reflecting the majority of the call volume coming from the east end of the county, Smith said. Curry needed the substation as it relies totally on the Sheriff's Department and a full-time school resource officer serves the Curry school campus, he said, adding the facility at the unmanned station will allow local residents to meet deputies in Curry. The substation will also be a safe exchange zone for dropping off packages and children, as 24/7 surveillance cameras are in place for monitoring from the county jail.
