National Service Recognition Day declared

Jasper Mayor David O'Mary, left, presented a proclamation to Curtis Batson, who oversees volunteer work for Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), at Tuesday's Jasper City Council meeting. The proclamation, passed by the council that day, designates April 2 as National Service Recognition Day to mark the positive work of service and volunteerism in the community. Batson said 135 volunteers in his program put in 22,500 hours of volunteer work, valued by the U.S. Department of Labor at about $22.84 an hour. RSVP, located locally at the American Red Cross building in Jasper, is a national volunteer network that connects seniors 55 and older with volunteer opportunities in their community.
