OAKMAN — Oakman High School senior Riley Brown said she simply wishes she had more time to cherish her last days of high school. Brown has been a standout during her time at Oakman — both inside the classroom and on the field — or the court. During her senior year, she has served as president of the Beta Club, vice president of the school’s SGA and has played varsity softball and basketball. She’s also involved in a number of organizations including Oakman’s science club, spanish club and others. more
Lou Vick, president and CEO of the Arc of Walker County, has seen major changes in the opportunities given to disabled individuals during his 30-year career. “People with disabilities were kept in segregated classrooms and I don’t know how much education went along with special education back [in the 1950s and 60s]. In elementary school, I remember there was a special education class and the folks in that class pretty much colored and painted and went on the playground,” he said. more
Walker County and northwest Alabama are still officially lingering in a small drought, while southeast and northeast Alabama have essentially returned to normal. The latest report Thursday from the U.S. Drought Monitor, which used data through Tuesday, shows the second-lowest drought level, moderate drought, still hanging over southeast and northwest Alabama. The lowest level, abnormally dry, is seen over central Alabama and other parts of the state. more
