Jasper City Board of Education members heard a proposal Monday night to develop a cross country track on the Jasper High School campus. Dustin Beaty, a cross country parent and member of Jasper’s running community, discussed two potential tracks that could be developed on the high school campus for the cross country team. With the permission of Jasper City Schools Superintendent Dr. Ann Jackson, Beaty and others have been studying areas of land that belong to the school system and identifying what the cost would be to develop a trail. more
A vehicle was stolen Wednesday afternoon from a Jasper auto dealership, leading to a high speed chase to Birmingham, where one person of interest was being held for questioning later in the day, Jasper Police Chief J.C. Poe said. more
Walker County Sheriff Jim Underwood filed a second civil suit against the Walker County Commission on Friday over budget cuts enacted in October. The complaint asks the court to require commissioners to fund the $5.2 million budget request made by Underwood for the current fiscal year or to appear in court showing cause why they cannot do so. more
SIPSEY — The Sipsey Town Council took action related to the fire department at a called meeting on Wednesday afternoon. After an executive session, the council came back and approved two motions, with the first one appointing Judson “Jud” Allen, the city’s legal council, to handle media relations regarding the Sipsey Volunteer Fire and Rescue department. The second motion also appointed Allen to send letters to the whole fire department, telling the members to turn their gear in to the Town of Sipsey. more
The Chamber of Commerce of Walker County will hold its annual countywide Christmas parade on Tuesday, with the deadline to enter the parade set for 4 p.m. Friday. The parade, which requires no fee to enter and is one of the largest holiday parades in the area, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, with lineup starting as early as 4 p.m. more
DORA — At Tuesday's Dora City Council meeting, Mayor Randy Stephens brought up the possibility of the City of Dora becoming part of a joint lawsuit being brought against a pharmaceutical company by a local law firm. According to Stephens, attorney Eddie Jackson "is representing Walker County as a whole, the Walker County Commission and several other municipalities, and I think Winston County has joined in on it, too. more
Walker County’s first Christmas parade of the year will be held Thursday night in Parrish. Lineup will be at 6 p.m. at the old bank building in downtown Parrish. The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. The 28th annual Christmas in Nauvoo parade will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. more
Teachers of the Year were recognized at the Jasper City Board of Education meeting Monday night. Teachers Kayla Goetz (Jasper High School), Stewart Ochs (Jasper Jr. High), Kaatje Harrison (Maddox Intermediate), Cameron Channell (Memorial Park Elementary) and Amy O’Rear (T.R. Simmons Elementary) were all presented with certificates of appreciation from Jasper City Schools Superintendent Dr. Ann Jackson for their work in the school system. more

One group of area golfers have combined their love for the game with their passion for the community to earn more than $110,000 since 2011 for a Jasper nonprofit. Byars-Wright Group, a Jasper-based insurance business, has sponsored a team in the Chubb Charity Challenge each year since 2011. Now in its 18th year, the Chubb Charity Challenge is an annual golf tournament aimed at raising funds for local charities across North America. Taking part in the tournament, agents and brokers, along with their clients, form golf teams, pay an entry fee, and play in local tournaments organized by Chubb’s nearby branch offices on behalf of a local charity of their choosing. The winning team in each regional tournament is invited to play in the national tournament each November, for a chance to win up to $50,000 in donations for their charity of choice. more
