Sears Holdings announced the store would close in December, and discounted merchandise has been sold over the past several weeks. Several retailers have expressed interest in opening in the retail space, but no official announcement has been made. more

OAKMAN — Oakman High School has a club for students where everyone fits in and can meet people with similar interests. Oakman Spanish teacher Nelly Fielding started Etc. Club at the high school last year to give students who don’t participate in sports or other extracurricular activities a chance to have fun doing things they enjoy and socialize with other students. more

The Walker County Health Action Partnership’s faith-based priority group is working to introduce a Congregational Health Program to churches across the county. Debbie Duke of Samford University’s Center for Faith and Health and director of the Congregational Health Program will be speaking Thursday at Los Reyes in downtown Jasper about developing a health ministry in local congregations. The meeting is open to the public and will last from noon until 1 p.m. more

Martine Beauvais, a 2009 Walker High School graduate, was recognized with a National Black Arts Festival Award for her fashion design talents at a Fine Art + Fashion event hosted by the store on Thursday, March 16. more
Milo’s restaurant is coming to Jasper, company officials confirmed Thursday afternoon. Company officials confirmed the news to the Daily Mountain Eagle Thursday. The company also posted the news that afternoon to its Twitter account, saying, “It’s true! It’s true! We are heading to Jasper.” The posting followed a story on al.com earlier in the day. more
An escaped Marion County inmate was recaptured in Carbon Hill in the early morning hours on Thursday after a local police officer saw the inmate sitting in a local house. According to Marion County Sheriff Kevin Williams, Cory Wayne Dean, 22, Brilliant, was arrested at 1:18 a.m. Marion County deputies picked him up at the Carbon Hill Jail and brought him back to the Marion County Jail in Hamilton. more
Walker County Center of Technology’s annual plant sale for the community will begin next week. In January, students at Jasper-based WCCT started planting vegetables, flowers and herbs in the campus greenhouse for the sale. With the exception of flowers, all other plants were grown from seeds by the students. more
