Three Walker County residents received federal prison sentences this month for conspiring to traffic methamphetamine, Walker County Sheriff Jim Underwood announced Thursday. Evan Andrew Norris, 39, of Thach, was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Connie Hallmark Batchelor, 44, of Pineywoods was sentenced to eight years and four months. Allen M. Morgan, 35, of Pineywoods, was sentenced to five years and three months in prison. Lamar Wayne Owen, 54, of Curry is currently awaiting sentencing. more
The Eighth Annual Walt Williams Golden Deeds Ride and Concert will be held Saturday at Restoration Hall in downtown Jasper. The event is held each year in memory of Walt Williams, who died in a motorcycle accident in January 2010. Williams is described by his family and friends as a selfless pillar of his community who worked very hard for the people of Walker County. It’s only fitting that those same family and friends have worked hard to keep his civic-minded ideals alive with this special ride. more
The City of Jasper will be designated as an Alabama Community of Excellence next month, ACE-Jasper coordinator Tana Collins said Thursday. After two years of completing the three-phase approach of the Alabama Communities of Excellence (ACE) program, Jasper will receive the designation at the Alabama League of Municipalities Annual Convention in Birmingham on Saturday, May 20. more
The Walker County Master Gardners will be hosting their annual plant sale on Saturday, May 6. This year’s plant sale will be held at the Walker County Farmer’s Market on Airport Road from 9 a.m. until all plants are sold. Master Gardners take a course at the Walker County Extension Office to learn about gardening, and graduates of the program grow all of the plants for each year’s plant sale. more
