Several sites in Walker County are featured in a new set of printed travel itineraries highlighting points of interest around the state. The ConnectLivity itineraries were developed around 12 themes: architecture/landscape, Alabama makers, arts, cars/motorcycles/rockets, claims to fame, civil rights, food and beverage, kids and family, Native American, natural wonders, outdoor and who knew. more

VALLEY — The Valley Junior High School fifth- and sixth-grade Quiz Bowl team recently won a tournament. The students placed first Saturday at the East Lawrence Middle School Invitational Quiz Bowl Tournament in Trinity, beating the undefeated team of East Lawrence Middle. Six students make up Valley’s fifth- and sixth-grade Quiz Bowl team, and this was the first time for this particular group of students to compete and win a tournament. more
The Town of Oakman is continuing to collect items for their toy drive. The deadline to donate items at Oakman Town Hall, Oakman Senior Center or Oakman’s Dollar General is this Friday by the end of the day. more
The 2017-2018 Chamber of Commerce of Walker County Junior Ambassadors wrapped up their first semester on Wednesday with big donations to both a local hospice and a food bank. The students, who are all seniors from every school around the county, brought in canned goods, blankets, pajamas and other items to be donated to the Southern Care New Beacon Hospice senior angel tree and the St. Cecilia Catholic Church food bank. more
DOUBLE SPRINGS - The Winston County Road Department has announced that work will now go forward a Winston County Road 12 culvert replacement project. Winston County Engineer Bryan Cheatwood said in an email recently that the Alabama Department of Transportation has issued a “notice to proceed” order for the project, set to take place in the Wilson Bend Community. more
The return of the Jasper Men’s Chorale in 2016 after a 20-year absence in Jasper was well received by everyone, according to all accounts. No one enjoyed the return more than the men themselves, so the chorale decided to do another Christmas Show in 2017. The men have been practicing since March on this year’s show, “The Christmas of a Lifetime.” As usual their show is expected to be full of humorous surprises, but, more importantly, beautiful music to start the Christmas season.There will be two performances, one Friday and one Saturday at 7 p.m. each night at Jasper High School’s Pam Brown Theater. General admission tickets, which are $12 each, are available for sale from chorale members, or at First Bank of Jasper, Bank of Walker County and Pinnacle Bank. Jasper Kiwanis Club President Jess Drummond, left, presents a $500 check to Daily Mountain Eagle Publisher James Phillips to be used for the Eagle Shoe Fund, the newspaper’s annual Christmas shoe drive. Phillips told the club during Monday’s club meeting that 475 children were helped with shoes during the charity’s annual giveaway. Families were also given grocery vouchers at the event. more
Jasper police officers will soon be equipped with body cameras after Jasper City Council members approved purchasing the equipment Tuesday morning. Council members unanimously voted to amend the city’s budget for fiscal 2018 to allow for the purchase of the cameras, as well as new air packs for the city’s fire department. more
The Walker County Commission on Monday discussed the problem of loggers and coal companies tearing up roads, with one commissioner charging the problem will not get better until the Sheriff’s Department starts writing tickets. more
