An officer-involved shooting occurred tonight on Interstate 22, Sheriff Nick Smith has confirmed. An individual wanted on several felonies fled from law enforcement in his vehicle and was arrested after getting stuck in mud. During the arrest, there was a struggle for a sheriff's deputy's gun and the individual was shot in the hand, according to Smith. ALEA is investigating the shooting. more

Alabama Power opens new Jasper office

Alabama Power officials chat on Tuesday afternoon, the day the company opened its new Jasper service center at 2501 Highway 78 W. The new facility replaces the downtown facility damaged by flooding, while offering more area for appliances and parking, well as a kiosk to pay bills, Alabama Power Credit Union service and a display screen to shop for furniture. Ralph Beavers of the the Citizens Advisory Committee connected with the Pineview Landfill in East Walker said Tuesday the committee voted recently to not support extending the life of the landfill.   more
