A ribbon cutting was held Friday at the new location of Shades Valley Dermatology in downtown Jasper. The office is located in the former Hope Clinic building on Fifth Avenue, across from Jasper’s First Baptist Church. Jasper Mayor David O’Mary and members of the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County were on hand to help Dr. Katherine Flanagan with the ribbon cutting. more
More than 200 archers participated in the Winter Warm-Up Archery tournament held Friday and Saturday at Bankhead Middle School. The winners in the elementary school division were East Elementary School, 1st place; Cordova Elementary, 2nd place; and Curry Elementary, 3rd place. The winners in the middle school division were Cullman Middle School, 1st place; Bankhead Middle School, 2nd place; and Thompson Middle School, 3rd place. Arlington High School was the only high school to particpate. The Cordova Blue Arrows have three tournaments in February — Feb. 15 at Lupton, Feb. 23 in Northport and Feb. 24 in Cullman. more
CARBON HILL — A company has given notice to the city of Carbon Hill it wants to start a new highwall coal mine in Carbon Hill, seeking permission from the city before getting permits and promising to give back 25 cents to the city for each clean ton produced. more
Winners of the Miss Sweetheart of Jasper High School pageant held Saturday night were, from left, Ella Brooke Abner, fourth runner-up; Alli Kay Alvis, second runner-up; Eden Tittle, Miss Sweetheart of Jasper High School; Ivey-Elise Ivey, first runner-up; and Ila Cate Crump, third runner-up. The pageant was sponsored by the Junior class of Jasper High School. Proceeds will be used for the Junior-Senior prom. more

CARBON HILL — Police Chief Eric House told the Carbon Hill City Council Thursday he had obtained 10 injection kits through a program made available through the Walker County District Attorney’s Office, which can allow a quick injection into the leg to prevent someone from dying from an overdose on opioids. more
