The “Chamber Checks” program is a way to encourage residents to shop locally during the holiday season, keeping important sales tax money here in the county and helping local businesses.
“The chamber maintains an ongoing ‘buy local’ focus through our successful ‘Chamber Checks’ program that encourages residents to keep their sales tax dollars in the community by patronizing local chamber merchants,” said Linda Lewis, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County.
The “Chamber Checks” program began two years ago, and Lewis said a little more than $7,000 worth of checks were bought. The program almost tripled last year, with more than $20,000 worth of the checks sold.
The best part of the program, Lewis said, is that all that money went back into the local economy.
“It’s been huge,” Lewis said, adding that chambers across the state have not fared as well as the local chamber has with the program.
“Chamber Checks” come in $10 increments, and the chamber will print the checks with the total amount desired as well as the recipient’s name on the front. The chamber will also provide an informational brochure that explains how the program works and where they can be redeemed.
“Chamber Checks” are treated just like regular checks and can be used at any Walker County business that’s a member of the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County. The checks do expire after 90 days.
“The checks can be used at a number of local retail businesses, but also can be redeemed at area banks, restaurants and grocery stores. They can also be used to pay your Alabama Power bill, if necessary,” Lewis said. “There’s so many opportunities to use them.”
Local businesses have expressed their support for the program, she said.
“This is one of the benefits of being a chamber member,” Lewis said, “because we want the shoppers inside their stores. Alot of businesses want to know what the chamber does for them. This program is a way that we bring the customers back to the businesses, and we’re keeping the money local.”
Businesses and individuals can purchase the “Chamber Checks” by stopping by the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County. If you want more information, you can call Lewis at the chamber at (205) 384-4571.
