After 18 years in the trucking industry, one local man decided to hang up his keys and follow his lifelong dream of running a restaurant.

Donald Watson and his wife, Lori, of Jasper are now the proud owners of the D & L Family Restaurant on Walston Bridge Road in Jasper.

“I quit trucking and decided to go insane, I guess you could say. It’s hard to make a living driving a truck nowadays, so I decided to try something different,” Watson said. “All my life I wanted to own my own restaurant, but never had the nerve to do it.”

Watson and his wife purchased the former Guthrie’s Family Restaurant and opened the doors of D & L on Mother’s Day, May 13. Business has been steadily growing ever since.

“We offer good ole’ country cooking just like your Mama cooks. Everything we serve is either fresh or fresh-frozen, not from a can,” Watson said. “I ate in a lot of places during my trucking career and I wanted to offer food that was not only good to eat, but would make folks want to come back for more.”

Watson said his family’s new restaurant is truly family-owned and operated. Several of the restaurant’s staff are family members.

“My mother-in-law comes in and cooks for us, my sister-in-law is our kitchen manager, and we have a few other kinfolks who work for us,” Watson said. “I guess you could say, we’re just a family-oriented business offering family-oriented food.”

D & L is open six days a week, Sunday through Friday with breakfast served from 5 until 10 a.m. and lunch served from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. A different menu is offered up each day, which includes three different meats as well as a variety of vegetables.

“My big dream is to some day offer a salad bar as well,” Watson said. “In my opinion, we do things other restaurants don’t or won’t do. We include the drink and tax in the price of our plates, so you’re only paying one price.”

Watson said he was hoping to get things back like it used to be, when Merlin and Barbara Guthrie owned and operated the restaurant.

“I remember coming in here and this place would be packed. There wouldn’t be a place to stand, let alone sit down,” Watson said. “And that’s what I would like to see again.”

D & L Family Restaurant is also on Facebook, where Watson said they will be posting daily specials.

“Just come in and say you saw it (the special) on the Internet,” Watson said. “We’re just trying to offer good ole’ country cooking, real homemade food that’s not out of the box or can, that keeps you come back for more.”
