David Davis and Steve Lawson of Davis Tree Service in Jasper were busy Wednesday afternoon removing the limbs from this oak tree located next to Ferris Eye Clinic at the intersection of 19th Street and Delaware Avenue in downtown Jasper.

The tree, which is believed to be around 100 years old, has been struck by lightning at least three times and the large crack that has appeared near the base of the tree was raising some concern about the danger the tree poses to the surrounding structures. Workers will remove the main trunk of the tree in pieces today using a large crane. Photo by: Elane Jones
