The third annual Backyard Blessings Festival will be held July 27, beginning at 7 p.m. on the field near the Sumiton Community Center.

Leneda Jones, founder of the organization, is hopeful that this year will be an even bigger success than past years. This year’s honorary chairman for the event is Walker County District Attorney Bill Adair.

Jones said they asked Adair to chair the event because of his dedication to the children of Walker County through his efforts to bring a Child Advocacy Center to the county.

“I am honored,” Adair said. “This is a great organization, and I support them 100 percent. I really admire what they are doing.”

Backyard Blessings is a nonprofit group, based in Sumiton, which provides food for needy school children in the area. The group has assisted children at Sumiton, Cordova and T.S. Boyd elementary schools for the last two years and last year expanded into Jasper’s T.R. Simmons and Memorial Park elementary schools as well. Jones said that Backyard Blessings distributed 13,283 bags of food to children in five area schools last year.

There will be a children’s area with an inflatable jungle slide and bounce house and a screen will be set up to show the animated movie “Monsters University.”

The Home Depot will also be there with their kids workshop set up.

As always, there will be a variety of food, snow-cones and popcorn. There will also be a music stage set up to showcase a variety of local musical talents.

Chavis Williams will be at the festival to sign autographs and take pictures with fans, and due to her popularity last year, the Face-Painting Fairy will once again be on hand to decorate faces.

This year will also feature a new “Local Authors” booth where approximately six local book authors will speak.

Backyard Blessings will begin taking applications for students the first week of school, and their first food distribution will be the first week of September.
