Organizers are now preparing for the 30th annual Northwest Alabama Mental Health Center Benefit Golf Tournament, which is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 16 at Musgrove Country Club in Jasper.

A field of approximately 20, four-person teams is expected to sign up for the event, which each year raises about $6,000 for the organization. Northwest Mental Health provides services in Walker, Winston, Lamar, Marion and Fayette counties.

“This is a fundraiser, but it’s really so much more than that for us,” said Skip Newman, executive director of Northwest Alabama Mental Health Center. “This event is as much about exposure for the services we provide as it is raising funds.”

Newman said the group will have plenty of information about its services available at Musgrove the day of the tournament.

The cost to participate in the golf tournament is $125 per person. Following an 11 a.m. lunch, the tournament will have a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m.

Several prizes will be awarded during the tournament for flight, longest drive, closest to the hole and straightest drive. There will also be a putting contest.

The tournament will also feature a $1 million hole-in-one chance for the contestant who gets closest to the pin on Hole 15. The golfer who gets closest on No. 15 will get one shot from 165 yards to win the $1 million.

“It’s not very often you get a chance to hit a golf ball for $1 million,” Newman said.

Other hole-in-one prizes include a Seiko watch on No. 3, premium golf equipment on No. 6, airline tickets for two on No. 9, an electronics package on No. 12 and $20,000 on No. 15.

Non-golfers will also have a chance to win money through the event’s annual ball drop, where participants may buy a numbered ball for $5, and whoever’s ball gets closest to the hole will win $1,000.

“In the past we’ve dropped the balls from a helicopter or a lift; this year, the Jasper Fire Department will be there and we’re dropping balls from its ladder truck,” Newman said.

To purchase a ball for the drop or for more information, call Sue Parnell at 205-531-4006, Janice Trotter at 205-302-9065 or Jenny Elliott at 205-302-9037.
