A suspect in Monday’s shooting death of a Jasper man was taken into custody in east Walker County Tuesday afternoon.

Johnny L. Cordell, 46, of Dora, was arrested just after 2 p.m. Tuesday in Dora. Jasper police were assisted in the arrest by officers from the Dora and Sumiton police departments.

Felony warrants were issued Monday charging Cordell with murder following the shooting death of 67-year-old Sherman Willis of Jasper. Cordell is being held in the Walker County Jail.

A 9:06 a.m. Monday, officers and investigators from the Jasper Police Department were called to 1202 Cherokee Road after Willis called to report to dispatchers that he had been shot. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Willis had suffered a gunshot wound.

Jasper firefighters, along with Regional Paramedic Services, responded to the scene and Willis was taken by ambulance to Walker Baptist Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

"I am appreciative of the assistance our department received from surrounding agencies from the time this call was broadcast to the suspect's arrest by Dora and Sumiton police departments,” Jasper Police Chief Connie Cooner Rowe said Tuesday night. "We were fortunate to have boots on the ground at the crime scene within a couple of minutes. This aided JPD's team of investigators — who have not rested since this incident occurred. It's their hard work that brought us to this point so quickly."
