It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Betty Jean Goldsmith of Sumiton. Betty Jean was the wife of 60 years to Brown Goldsmith; a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and favorite aunt to many nieces and nephews.

She touched many lives through church service and an open home. She spent her childhood years near Sipsey, later marrying and moving to Portage, Ind., and years later returned to Alabama.

Betty Jean was born on Sept. 6, 1933, to John Edward and Cora Myers, the youngest of nine children.

She is survived by her husband Brown Goldsmith; her daughters, Cora Denise Hill and Alonna (James) Alonso; her sons, Dennis (Diane) Goldsmith and Drenen (Sun Hwa) Goldsmith; grandchildren, Clay Hill, Dany’elle (Ty) Edwards, Matthew Hill, Kiala, Jeremiah, Ryan, Catie and Corie Goldsmith, and Jamalon and Kierstyn Alonso; one great-grandson, Gavin Edwards; special nieces, Becky Watkins and Joan Cruce; one brother, Johnnie Myers; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Betty passed away on May 21, 2012. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at 2 p.m. in the New Horizon Memorial Chapel. The Revs. Wayne Williams, Phillip Starnes and Doug Tate will officiate. Burial will follow at Rice’s Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be today, May 22, 2012, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

A reception following interment will be held in the Rice’s Chapel fellowship hall.
