A special breakfast honoring the 1963 championship football team is among the fundraisers being planned this year by the Cordova Quarterback Club.

Tim O’Neal, who was a member of the team and went on to coach the Blue Devils from 1981 to 1991, will be the guest speaker at the breakfast on Saturday, Sept. 14.

The Quarterback Club, which sponsors Blue Devil Day at the start of each football season, recently added monthly breakfasts to its list of fundraisers at the request of head coach Jimmy Gay.

Approximately 100 people turned out for a pancake breakfast held at Cordova High School on July 13.

“It was a trial run for us, and we were really pleased with the outcome,” said Ginger Stacks of the Quarterback Club.

Another pancake breakfast is planned for this Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m. The cost per plate is $6.

Blue Devil Day will be held Saturday, Aug. 17, beginning at 3 p.m. This year the location has been changed from the Old Park to the high school parking lot.

Vendor spaces are available for $25.

The day will include food, inflatables, a climbing wall and a community yard sale that is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. The pep rally will be at 7 p.m.

The breakfast for the ‘63 team in September will conclude a weekend in which they will be recognized at the first home game against Vinemont.

The Blue Devils racked up wins against Parrish, Dora, Double Springs, Martin, Oakman, West Blocton, Montevallo, Carbon Hill and Curry in their road to the championship 50 years ago.

The 2013 football season is also being dedicated to the team.
