Boyd leads Corner past West Blocton

At West Blocton, Corner quarterback Blake Boyd totaled more than 200 yards of offense to lead the Yellow Jackets past West Blocton 14-9 in the Class 4A, Region 4 opener for both teams Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets broke a 7-7 tie with 5:03 left on the clock in the final quarter when Matt Vatani scored on a six-yard run. Troy Elliott’s extra point put Corner up 14-7. West Blocton added a safety at the 1:03 mark, but would get no closer.

Corner opened the scoring on the night when Byrd hit Kerry Smith for a 63-yard touchdown pass. Elliott’s extra point made the score 7-7 with 7:21 left in the opening quarter. West Blocton scored its touchdown on a four-yard run with 4:49 left in the third quarter to tie the game.

For Corner (1-1, 1-0), Byrd completed 9 of 13 passes for 133 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Smith had six receptions for 89 yards. Byrd also rushed 19 times for 71 yards.

Defensively, Jake Averhart had 13 tackles and Vatani had 11.
