Cagle, Crook earn week’s top honors

Lynn receiver Ben Cagle is having a record-breaking season.

As the top threat for quarterback Brody Meeks, Cagle has had three games with 200 or more yards receiving this season.

The latest came in Friday’s 78-38 loss to No. 5 Marion County. The senior hauled in 10 passes for an even 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns, giving Lynn one bright spot in the region loss. He had touchdown catches of 61 and 12 yards.

Cagle is the Daily Mountain Eagle’s Offensive Player of the Week.

Cagle leads the area with 55 catches for 927 yards and eight touchdowns on the season. He is averaging 154.5 receiving yards per game and 16.8 yards per reception. He also leads the team with three interceptions.

On the defensive side of the ball, Walker’s Jaiquan Crook had a dominant performance against Hayden in their region matchup.

The senior linebacker had 14 tackles, including a pair of sacks, as Walker registered its first shutout of the season, blanking the Wildcats 42-0. The Vikings’ defense allowed Hayden into the red zone just once in the game.

It was Walker’s first shutout since a 37-0 home win against Hayden last season.

Crook now has 64 tackles on the season for an average of 10.7 tackles per game.

Other top performances

•Oakman senior quarterback Jase Trotter totaled 271 yards of offense and three touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 41-7 win over Sulligent. He completed 7-of-14 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 104 yards and a score. Receiver Deontre Muse had four catches for 140 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

•Lynn senior quarterback Brody Meeks had 427 yards of offense and five touchdowns in the loss to Marion County. He rushed 19 times for 178 yards and three touchdowns. He also completed 16-of-30 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns.

•Filling in after Dora’s top two offensive threats went down with injury, Darius Davis led the Bulldog offense with 12 rushes for 172 yards and three touchdowns in a 50-27 loss to Bibb County.

•Corner linebacker Jake Averhart had 14 tackles, including three for loss, in the Yellow Jackets’ narrow 21-18 come-from-behind win over Oak Grove. Hunter Doppler rushed 20 times for 105 yards and a touchdown for Corner.

•Addison’s Taylor Wilson rushed eight times for 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Bulldogs defeated Meek 47-8.

•Winston County quarterback Timber Blankenship threw a 59-yard touchdown pass and added an 11-yard touchdown run as the Yellow Jackets battled back from an 18-0 deficit to beat Cordova 34-25.

•Walker quarterback Bryant Atkins had 213 yards of offense in the Vikings’ win over Hayden.He completed 9-of-15 passes for 180 yards and added 33 rushing yards.

 Senior running back Joe Bell rushed six times for 55 yards and three touchdowns while senior linebacker Austin Mansell added 10 tackles.
