A local man who died earlier this year following a lengthy battle with sarcoma cancer will be remembered in an upcoming fundraiser for the Georgia Cancer Center.

Pastor Sam Baker of Ministries Outreach in Jasper said a walk-a-thon in memory of Jonathan Michael Uptain is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 6-7, at Gamble Park. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon each day.

Uptain is the brother of Baker’s wife, Mandi.

“It was something that struck home to us, so we want to do this for him,” Baker said.

After Uptain was given months to live by a Birmingham hospital, the treatment he received at the Georgia Cancer Center extended his life by four years.Uptain died in January at the age of 37.

Participants are encouraged to contact Baker at 265-2329 to register for the walk-a-thon. Sponsor sheets are available at the ministry.

The person who submits the most paid sponsors or donations will receive a prize from the ministry. With the funds raised from the event, a gold leaf bearing Uptain’s name will be added to a wall at the Georgia Cancer Center.
