Cesaro, the current World Wrestling Entertainment United States Champion, will face The Miz in Birmingham Sunday at a special event the WWE is calling “Pregame Pandemonium.” The card has a special start time of 1 p.m. and will take place at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center.
“The American Super Bowl is Sunday. I care nothing about American football. Rugby and wrestling are sports for real athletes,” Cesaro said in a recent phone interview from Houston.
“If I was a fan, I would much rather be at a WWE event instead of sitting on my couch watching pre-game shows and being lazy.”
According to his WWE bio, Cesaro excelled on several European rugby teams but was banned from the sport due to excessive aggression.
After honing his skills in Europe and in independent wrestling organizations in America for 12 years, Cesaro made his WWE debut in April 2012.
At the WWE’s SummerSlam pay-per-view in August, Cesaro won his first title with the organization — the U.S. Championship, which he still holds.
“I am already the greatest United States Champion of all time,” Cesaro said.
“No one can beat me for this title. Many WWE superstars have already tried, and they have failed. I’m proving that I am a superior athlete. I am especially superior to any American athlete. They don’t work as hard as I work.”
Over the last several weeks, Cesaro and Miz have formed a heated rivalry. Cesaro even successfully defended his title against the former WWE Champion at Sunday’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view.
“I respect the Miz as a wrestler. He is a former WWE champ, and he headlined Wrestlemania,” Cesaro said.
“With that said, he still isn’t the caliber of athlete that I am.”
Cesaro said Miz’s personality is something he doesn’t respect.
“He’s just like all Americans. He’s loud and obnoxious,” Cesaro said.
“I don’t respect that, and I plan on beating him again when we wrestle in Birmingham.”
The Pregame Pandemonium event will be Cesaro’s first time to wrestle in Birmingham.
“I’m looking forward to my first trip to Birmingham,” he said. “Fans there should respect a great athlete like Antonio Cesaro.”
The card for Sunday’s event will be headlined by a tag team match featuring recent Royal Rumble winner John Cena teaming with Ryback to face CM Punk and Dolph Ziggler. In other action, WWE Tag Team Champions Kane and Daniel Bryan will defend their belts against the Shield. Other superstars scheduled to appear include Zack Ryder and several WWE Divas. The entire card for the event has not been released.
Tickets for the event range from $15 to $95 and are available at the ticketmonger.coma or the BJORK box office.
