The East Walker Chamber of Commerce will hold its second annual 5K and fun run on Oct. 13. The race will begin at 7 a.m. at the Alabama Mining Museum on Sharon Boulevard.

This year’s route will leave the museum, wind onto the city’s walking track and then back up Sharon Boulevard to the mining museum. The one-mile fun run will begin immediately after the completion of the 5K, although organizer Melissa Justice cautions that participants should arrive before the 5K begins because Dora police plan to close the roads to ensure the safety of the runners.

“Last year we had some runners who couldn’t get to the fun run because the roads were already closed,” Justice said.

The fee for the 5K is $25, which includes a T-shirt and small breakfast after the race. The fun run also includes a T-shirt and breakfast for an entry fee of $15. There will also be door prizes given away by the sponsors of the race.

Each entry fee contributes $5 to the school of the runner’s choice or to the mining museum. Last year’s race raised more than $300 for local schools.

“Everybody came together really well,” Justice said. “I thought last year turned out really good. We had 68 runners, which was pretty good for the first year.”

The event includes people of all ages, and Justice said calling it a “race” or “run” shouldn’t discourage anyone from coming out and enjoying the day with the community.

“Anybody can do it,” Justice said. “You can just walk it, there is no time limit.”

Justice also contributes much of the race’s success last year to the fact that the community banded together and supported the effort.

She said everyone played a role, from the police department, who kept participants safe, and the volunteers, who kept things running smoothly, to the road crews, who prepared the route and kept things clean and neat for the run. She also thanked the sponsors last year who gave supplies and prizes.

Anyone intersted in running in either race can pick up an entry form at the East Walker Chamber of Commerce, or call the Chamber at 205-255-0202 or email Justice at melissajusticebroker @gmail. com.
