A shooting that took the life of a Sumiton toddler remains under investigation.

Sumiton Police Chief T.J. Burnett confirmed a small child was killed Monday after a shooting happened at approximately 5:30 p.m. at a home in the 100 block of Wingate Drive. The shots were fired from a pistol.

While police have not released the victim’s identity, the Daily Mountain Eagle has confirmed through various sources the child was Landon Kyle Walker, 3, of Sumiton.

No charges have been filed in the shooting.

The child’s body has been taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for an autopsy. Steve Heathcock, a representative with the Walker County Coroner’s Office, said he expected preliminary autopsy results to be returned within the next few days.

Sumiton police are continuing the investigation and were at the scene Tuesday.
