In a continuing effort to provide events in downtown Jasper, the city is hosting is first ethnic day Saturday with a celebration of Mexican heritage.

The event will be held on 19th Street in the parking lot next to Town Creek, near the future site of Hope Clinic. Festivities will continue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

From 10 a.m. to noon, there will be several games for children as well as pinatas and games of Mexican bingo.

Mexican-style dancers will provide entertainment at noon, followed by a four-man mariachi band at 1 p.m.

Throughout the day, a display of artifacts from Mexico will be available for viewing. A local Hispanic grocery store will be on site, selling food items that are typically not carried in American grocery stores. Los Reyes Mexican Restaurant will have a limited menu available in the parking lot for purchase all day.

“We are excited about our first ethic day downtown,” said Don Goetz, an organizer of the event. “We have six planned for the rest of the year. This is a good way to celebrate the different cultures that make up Jasper. We want to invite everyone to come out.”
