Signs asking motorists to “Drive Carefully, Protect Children” will soon be placed across the city thanks to the work of the Kiwanis Club of Jasper.

Kiwanis Club members approached the Jasper City Council about the signs Tuesday.

“We are asking to place the signs and also asking the city’s assistance to put them on poles,” Kiwanis President Pollyanna Higgs said.

Higgs said the group wants to place the signs in strategic locations association with children, such as schools, parks, pools, ball parks and splash pads.

“Children are the mission of Kiwanis,” she said. “‘Serving one child at a time’ is the vision for the International Club of Kiwanis.”

Council members voted unanimously to approve the signs.

Higgs also invited council members to the Kiwanis Pancake Day, which will take place from 6 to 11 a.m. Saturday morning.

“It’s $5 per plate and will be at the Bevill cafeteria. We’d love to see you guys there,” she said.

In other action, the council:

•Tabled a request for a parade permit by Salatha Hundley for an event on June 22.

•Renewed a contract with Henry Oil to supply fuel to the city.

•Approved travel for municipal court personnell for required training.

•Approved an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation for mowing of certain rights-of-way in the city.

•Approved a pay policy change concerning employees in a probationary period. The change will allow those employees to receive step raises that are given by the city.
