Cordova earns sweep of Winston County

CORDOVA — Jeffre Wingo drove in Andrew Minor with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Cordova to a 6-5 victory over Winston County in their area matchup at Cordova High School Friday night.

The Blue Devils finished off the sweep, beating the Yellow Jackets 11-1 in five innings in the second game of the double header.

In a back-and-forth opener, Winston County notched the score with a run in the top of the seventh. Cordova wasted no time in the bottom of the inning. Andrew Minor opened with a double and came home on Wingo’s hit.

Cordova (14-5 overall, 2-0 in 3A, Area 14) led 1-0 after the first inning and 3-2 after the second inning. After Winston County tied the game at 3-3 in the third, the Blue Devils added a pair of runs in the fourth for a 5-3 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets tied the game with runs in the fifth and seventh.

Cordova’s Wingo got the win after allowing just one run after Winston County loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh.

Hunter Gilmore started for Cordova and went the first four innings, striking out one. Wingo went the final three innings, striking out two.

Cordova had 10 hits in the game. The Blue Devils also took advantage of eight Winston County errors, which led to three unearned runs.

Wingo finished 2 for 4 with an RBI while both Gilmore and Cam Honeycutt were 2 for 3. Zac Guerra was 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI and Stephen Kilpatrick was 1 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.

Cordova 11, Winston County 1, 5 innings

Chase Trotter went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs as Cordova won the nightcap 11-1 in five innings.

The Blue Devils trailed 1-0 before striking for five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Cordova added four more runs in the fourth for a 9-1 advantage. The Devils closed out the game with two runs in the fifth.

Wingo, Kilpatrick, Taylor Trotter, Clark Chance and Honeycutt each pitched for Cordova with Trotter picking up the win. Winston County (13-8, 0-2) was held to just four hits in the loss.

Honeycutt was 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Wingo walked three times and finished 1 for 1 with a double and two RBIs, Guerra added a double and an RBI.

Cordova has now won 12 of its last 13 games with the only setback coming in a 4-1 loss to Oakman on Tuesday.

The Blue Devils play at 11 a.m. Thursday vs. Northside in the Cordova Spring Break Tournament.

Winston County hosts Holly Pond on Tuesday.
