The Blue Devils started off strong, with Noah Ard returning the kickoff to his own 34 yard line. Three plays later, he would put Cordova on the board by running it in from 32 yards out. After a successful 2-point conversion run by Andrew Minor, the Devils led 8-0. Winfield answered quickly, however, with Edward McCollum busting open a 21 yard run for a touchdown, but the extra point kick was blocked, making it only 8-6. The Blue Devils would seemingly go three and out, but a fake punt run by Zachary Smith gave Cordova a second chance to put points on the board. On a 4th and 15 from the Winfield 43-yard line, Chase Trotter's pass fell incomplete.
Three possessions later, McCollum would run it in again for a touchdown to give the Pirates the lead with 4:09 left in the half. He then ran it in for the 2-point conversion making it 14-8.
Cordova forced turnovers on each of the Pirates' first two drives of the second half, a fumble recovery on the Blue Devil 40-yard line and a pass interception by Cordova's Zachary Smith. The Devils were unable to capitalize on either mistake, not getting any points.
After a scoreless third quarter, McCollum ran for 20 yards and Kody Nixon for 28 setting the Pirates up on the Cordova 3-yard line. McCollum busted it in for the final score of the evening. Dawson Dean ran it in for the 2-point conversion, bringing Winfield's lead to 22-8.
Cordova wasn't finished, however, with Trotter throwing for 45 yards on their final drive. A pass interference call in the endzone put the Blue Devils on the Winfield 3-yard line, but Smith lost 12 yards on a run play. With 2 seconds left in the game, Trotter's pass fell incomplete in the endzone to end the game.
Winfield's Edward McCollum finished the game with 125 rushing yards, three touchdowns, a fumble, and an interception.
For Cordova, Andrew Minor rushed for 74 yards. Chase Trotter passed for 73 yards. Noah Ard completed one pass for 15 yard and rushed for 64 yards & a touchdown.
It's non-region play next week as Winfield (2-2, 1-2) hosts Haleyville.
Cordova (0-4, 0-3) goes on the road to Parrish.
