Cordova’s football program has gone through wholesale changes since the end of last season.
The Blue Devils have a new coaching staff and lost four All-State players from last year’s team that won 10 games and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs.
The one constant is the Blue Devils’ schedule, which includes some of the toughest competition around as Cordova begins the Woody Smothers era at Hudson-Kirby Stadium.
The team still has to face the likes of state runner up Hamilton, 1A state semifinalist Parrish and perennial power Winfield.
There is good news — all three of those games will be at home this year.
Outside of Hamilton, Parrish and Winfield, which combined for a 32-8 record, Cordova doesn’t face another team that had a winning record last year.
The remaining seven opponents finished a combined 17-54.
Though Cordova takes on a total of five teams that made the postseason in 2010, the list includes both Dora and Winston County — the only two teams in the state to make the playoffs with just three wins.
The middle of the season features back-to-back home games against Winfield and Parrish. Hamilton, last year’s record champion, makes the trip to Cordova in Week 8. The Aggies handed the Devils their only regular-season loss last year.
Cordova will leave Walker County just twice during the regular season.
The Blue Devils make a trip to Cullman County to take on Vinemont in Week 3 and they travel to Double Springs to play Winston County in Week 9. Three other road games — Dora, Carbon Hill and Curry — will make for short road trips.
Cordova opens the season on the road at rival Dora on Thursday, Aug. 25. The Blue Devils have won the last four meetings and lead the series 47-38. Last year’s game set the tone for both teams with Cordova pulling out a 13-7 overtime win.
The Blue Devils play four Walker County teams this season. Cordova hasn’t lost to county team since falling to Dora 21-19 in the 2006 season opener.
The Blue Devils have won 15 straight games against squads from Walker County.
This year’s schedule: Aug. 25-at Dora; Sept. 2-Holly Pond; Sept. 9-at Vinemont; Sept. 16-Winfield; Sept. 23-Parrish; Sept. 30-Hanceville; Oct. 7-at Carbon Hill; Oct. 14-Hamilton; Oct. 21-at Winston County; Oct. 28-at Curry.
