CORNER — The Corner Yellow Jackets had a lot to celebrate for homecoming on Friday night, as they stung the Carbon Hill Bulldogs 38-0.

The Bulldogs were marred with minor injuries to several starters, which resulted in a major impact in the game.

The Jackets took their first possession at their own 32-yard line. After gaining two first downs in the series, a high spiral bound for the end zone found its way into the arms of Carbon Hill’s Chandler Gann.

The Bulldogs were able to gain some positive yardage on the next few plays, but a fumble brought the Corner offense back out onto the field.

Two short runs and an incomplete pass later, the Jackets set up in a punt formation. A fake punt caught the ‘Dogs off guard, resulting in the Jackets’ Hunter Doppler going into the end zone with 6:40 left in the first quarter. However, an illegal block recalled the touchdown, bringing the Jackets back to the Bulldogs’ 45-yard line.

Corner’s Cody Studdard ended the drive with a 31-yard field goal, putting three points on the board with 4:31 left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs found themselves struggling on the next drive, and a quick fourth down approached forcing a punt. Corner fumbled the punt, but quickly recovered. On the next play, Doppler found the end zone again, this time with the points staying on the board. With 2:36 left in the opening quarter, Corner led the visiting Bulldogs 10-0.

Carbon Hill took possession on the next play, marching down the field with short passes and powering runs. On a short pass intended for Chandler Gann, Doppler stepped in the path to claim an interception, running 52 yards into the Bulldog end zone again for a touchdown. At the end of the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets had a 17-0 lead over the Bulldogs.

On Corner’s next drive, Chase Best found Dylan Hand for a 9-yard touchdown pass. With 8:01 left in the half, Corner led the ‘Dogs 24-0.

The Bulldogs refused to give in, as Chandler Gann, Stevie Simerly, and Jacob Mitchell would all play part in finding their way down the field. That momentum stopped when Dylan Hand intercepted a Bulldog Pass with 3:41 left in the half. Corner#s Taylor Crawford put his points on the board with a 2-yard run, bringing the score to 31-0 with 1:38 left in the half.

The tired teams spent the third quarter and most of the fourth with unsuccessful plays and incomplete passes. The Bulldogs and the Jackets would take turns punting the ball, until with 3:20 left to play, and interception and 55-yard run by Chase Goodwin would secure the 38-0 victory for the Jackets.

Carbon Hill (0-8, 0-6) hosts Dora next week.
