CORNER — Calera beat Corner 33-22 at the Jackets field for a big class 4A battle in area play Friday night.

Corner got the ball first, but it was 3 plays and a punt for the Jackets. Calera took over on its own 30 yard line and wasted no time running for 2 quick first downs. Then senior QB Zachary Reneau threw to Jordan Bishop for a 44 yard touchdown strike. The extra point try was no good and Calera went up 6-0 with 9:02 left in the 1st quarter.

After a fumble and an incomplete pass by Corner, they had to punt again. The Eagles took over on their own 21 and marched down the field and on a 3rd and 5, Reneau passed to Ronnie Clark for 25 yards down to the Jacket’s 4 where Sam Adams ran the ball in for Calera’s 2nd TD of the 1st quarter. Stephen Ellison added the extra point for a 13-0 lead.

But Corner would answer on its 3rd possession in the 1st quarter on a 61 yard strike from QB Blake Byrd to wide receiver Kerry Smith with 1:33 left. Preston Gardiner would add the extra point to cut the lead to 13-7.

But back came the Eagles. With 8:44 left in the half, Adams ran up the middle, cut outside and outran the Jackets secondary for 47 yards and the score. Ellison kicked the extra point and Calera was up at the half 20-7. Adams ran 8 time for 97 yards in the first half.

Calera took the second half kickoff and ran the ball 7 straight times down to the Corner 15, where Corner stopped the Eagles, who would settle for a field goal that was good from 35 yards out by Ellison, but the Jackets roughed the kicker on the play. Calera took the points off the board and set up at the Jacket 8 yard line first and goal. It looked bad after Adams lost 9 yards on the first play, but Reneau found Clark for a 17 yard scoring pass to put the Eagles up 26-7 after the kick was no good.

Corner wasn’t done for the night. They took over with 5:36 left in the 3rd and drove right back at the Eagles, with Byrd flying over the Eagle defense for a touchdown with 11:28 left in the game. Corner FB Matthew Vatani took the snap and ran in the two point conversion to cut the lead to 26-15.

But again Calera would run the ball 11 times for 66 yards ending on a 2 yard plunge by Reneau to go back up 33-15 after Ellison kicked the extra point.

Corner would score once more before time was up on a pass from Byrd to Smith on a 21 yard TD to make the final 33-22 as

Gardiner added the extra point.

Adams finished with 169 yards on 18 carries and 2 touchdowns while Reneau had 162 yards on 11 of 15 passing and 2TD’s.

For Corner, Byrd ran 15 times for 56 yards scoring once and had 159 yards on 8 of 15 pass completions with two TD’s.
