Roger Kimbrell, a member of Oakman’s newly elected town council, submitted a letter of resignation to Mayor Dennis Welch.

Kimbrell, who ran unopposed for Council Seat 4, cited health reasons for his sudden resignation. The council, consisting of four new members, was sworn in on Nov. 5, 2012, and has met twice since then for their regular November and December meetings.

In the most recent Oakman municipal election, four of the council seats were unopposed. Only one race, for Seat 5, had a contest between Sarah Woods, the eventual winner, and Myra Heron.

The council must now vote on accepting the resignation, although Welch said that process was just a formality. The council will then declare the seat open and can vote to appoint someone to the seat.

“We have to accept the resignation at this meeting and we can fill it at the February meeting,” Welch said.

Welch said that some people had already expressed interest in serving the city in that capacity, but the decision for who to appoint would ultimately be up to the vote of the city council.

Kimbrell could not be reached late Thursday for comment.
