The top six designs were presented by Ashley Weldon, Landon Cooper, Bailee Dumis, Haley Phillips, Desirae Goodwin and Austin Glover.
In other business:
•The council voted to participate in the workers’ compensation program, obey all safety rules and pay the insurance premium for the workers’ comp policy.
•The council decided to hold an open community meeting regarding the alcohol ordinance at the next regular council meeting.
That meeting is scheduled for June 5, at 9 a.m. This will be the final discussion of the measure, the council plans to vote and adopt the ordinance at the second council meeting of June.
•The council voted to annex a piece of property that crosses over the line into Jefferson County. Mayor Petey Ellis told the council that the property owner had met all the requirements for annexation.
Fire Chief David Waid asked the council to provide an updated map of the city’s boundaries to assist his department and clear up confusion with the Bagley Fire Department. Property outside Sumiton’s jurisdiction would fall to the Bagley Fire Department and would be subject to their fire dues.
•The mayor introduced an ordinance that would allow the city to participate in the state-wide tax-free weekend for storm repair supplies and storm-readiness equipment.
