The top three candidates for the city’s vacant fire chief position interviewed with the Jasper City Council Monday, and the council is scheduled to vote today on who will be hired.

The council is set to meet at 10 a.m. today in the council chambers on the second floor at City Hall in downtown Jasper. The meeting is open to the public.

Acting Jasper Fire Chief David Clark, Lt. Dante Fields of the Jasper Fire Department and current Adamsville Fire Chief Scott Harbison each spent about 45 minutes addressing council members during an interview process that took place during a work session Monday.

Harbison, 45, lives in the Saragossa community and currently serves as fire chief in Adamsville. In all, he’s worked as a firefighter for the past 23 years. He is also an active member of the Walker County Sheriff’s Office’s reserve officer program and works with the Saragossa Volunteer Fire Department.

Clark, 44, has served for the past four months as acting chief of the department. He’s been employed full-time with the Jasper Fire Department for the past 18 years and spent several years prior to that working part-time.

Fields, 43, has worked with the Jasper Fire Department for the past 15 years and was promoted to lieutenant after working just four years with the department.

Each of the candidates said proper training for firefighters is the biggest issue they see needing to be addressed with the fire department.
