Curry drops home opener to Mortimer Jordan

CURRY — The home opener at Hudson-O’Rear Stadium turned out to be very disappointing for the Curry Yellow Jackets, as they fell to the Mortimer Jordan Blue Devils 42-16.

For the second straight week, the Yellow Jackets have been plagued with a couple of costly turnovers and penalties.

Mortimer Jordan notches their first win of the season and they are a perfect 9-0 against the Jackets.

The Jackets totaled 280 yards of total offense on the night, while the Blue Devils racked up 409 total offensive yards.

The Blue Devils took advantage of an early turnover by the Jackets with 9:34 left in the opening quarter. Sean Morro found a wide open Tate Day on a 59 yard touchdown strike. The extra point was good and the Devils were up 7-0.

The Blue Devils running back Deandres Merriweather would score one of his two touchdowns of the night with 4:52 left in the first quarter. Merriweather would scamper in from 15 yards out. The extra point was good and the Devils were up 14-0.

Just three minutes later in the quarter following a turnover on downs by the Jackets, Merriweather added his second touchdown of the night. The Devils were up 21-0 following the extra point.

The Yellow Jackets tacked on their first points of the night with a field goal by Bradley Loggins to cut into the lead 21-3.

The Devils would answer the Jackets score with a touchdown of their own to push the lead out 28-3.

The Jackets would strike quick on their next drive with 3:08 left to play until the half. Loggins would hit Lane Oliver on a five yard touchdown strike. The extra point was blocked and the score was 28-9.

The Yellow Jackets defense rose to the occasion to force a fumble on Mortimer Jordan’s next possession. The Jacket offense would go back to work on the Devils’ 19-yard line with 1:19 left in the half.

Loggins would hit Oliver again with a 19 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good and the Jackets trailed 28-16.

The Blue Devils would tack on a late score and go in at the half up 35-16 and would later add another score late in the third quarter to finish their scoring for the night.

Offensively, the Yellow Jackets were led by Loggins on the night. He threw for 158 yards on 12 of 18 passing with a touchdown and an interception. Oliver finished the night with two catches for 16 yards and a touchdown. Jarrod Owens had 83 yards receiving with three catches.

The Devils were led by Morro, who had 191 yards on 13 of 20 passing and two touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown.

Defensively, Santos Martinez finished the night with 15 tackles, two for loss.

The Yellow Jackets (1-2,0-2) travel to face Walker in another region game next Friday night.
