Curry edges Cordova for tournament title

CORDOVA — Curry dominated its first four matches at the Cordova Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.

Then the Yellow Jackets ran into a determined Cordova team.

The Blue Devils battled their way out of the loser’s bracket and forced Curry into a decisive second match before the Yellow Jackets finally finished off Cordova for the tournament title.

Curry won the final match 25-19, 16-25, 15-8 to close out a long day at Cordova High School.

Josie Walker paced the Yellow Jackets (16-12) with 10 kills, eight assists and five digs. Holli McGinnis had 20 digs and three kills, Gabby Englebert had 20 assists, four digs, three aces and three blocks, Hannah Simmons had nine kills and Taylor Rowe had five kills and seven digs.

Curry opened the day with a win over Carbon Hill, beating the Bulldogs 25-20, 16-25, 15-9. Curry followed with wins over Center Point (25-22, 25-18) and Haleyville (25-23, 25-23) before topping Cordova in the winner’s bracket final (25-16, 25-13).

Cordova (20-8) fought its way back to the final with a win over Carbon Hill. The Blue Devils, who had to beat Curry twice in order to win the title, defeated the Jackets 29-27, 25-18 to force one last match for the championship.
