CURRY — The Curry Yellow Jackets felt their first region defeat Friday night,as they fell 52-16 to the hands of the Center Point Eagles.

The Jackets came in riding high following their season opening victory over Carbon Hill and was looking to capitalize with a region victory.

But with a bruising and scorching running attack, the Eagles (2-0, 1-0) just dominated the line of scrimmage throughout the game. On the night, the Eagles racked up 321 yards on the ground against the Jackets defense. Eagles’ runningbacks Virgil Studdard and Morris Davis tallied 245 yards combine on the ground.

Curry(1-1, 0-1) fell behind 6-0 early in the first quarter, following  Studdard’s 48 yard touchdown romp with 10:14 left. The Jackets cut the lead to 6-3 with 4:49 left in the first quarter, following a 25-yard field goal by Sam Speegle. That was as close as the Jackets would get the rest of the way.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Eagles Dequarius Simmons would find open daylight and rumble in from 75 yards out for the score.

Curry never could get their offense going all night. The stifling defense of the Eagles just completely disrupted any drive the Jackets could muster. Jackets quarterback Jarrod Owens finished the night with 46 yards on the 12 carries, while he threw for 99 yards on 11 of 21 passing. He connected twice with Tyler Williams for touchdowns.

The Jackets were able to cut into a 24-3 halftime deficit with 8:40 left in the third quarter. Owens would roll out and throw a Tim Tebow style jump pass in the endzone to a wide open Williams for the score. The extra point was good and the Jackets trailed 24-10.

The Eagles answered the Jackets score with one of their own with 6:08 left to play in the third. Keilan Knight would hit Sherman Starks on a 35 yard touchdown strike. Following the two-point conversion the Eagles led 32-10.

Knight finished the night with 131 yards through the air with a touchdown, while rushing for 43 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.Starks finished the night with three catches for 69 yards and a score for the Eagles.

The Jackets trailing 52-10 late in the game would tack on their final points of the night with 3:09 left. Owens would find Williams again on a five yard touchdown pass. The extra point attempt failed.

The Jackets hope to get back on the winning track next Friday night. They travel to face Mortimer Jordan in another region contest.
