One third of the No. 1-ranked teams in the Alabama Sports Writers Association softball poll are from Walker County.

Both the Curry Yellow Jackets and Sumiton Christian Eagles hold down the top spot in their respective classifications.

Curry (10-2) is No. 1 in Class 5A while Sumiton Christian (8-4) is No. 1 in Class 1A.

The Yellow Jackets and Eagles are among six area teams ranked in the softball poll.

Along with Sumiton Christian, Lynn (17-0) is ranked No. 2 and defending champion Parrish is No. 4 in Class 1A.

Cordova (4-5-1) is ranked No. 8 in Class 3A and Corner (3-2-1) is No. 9 in Class 4A.

Both Curry and Sumiton Christian advanced to the state tournament last season with the Yellow Jackets placing third behind Hayden and Scottsboro in Montgomery. Hayden currently holds down the No. 3 spot in the poll while Scottsboro is No. 7.

Sumiton Christian placed sixth at the state tournament last season.

Parrish, which won the school's first softball championship in 2013, returns this season without state MVP Grayson Culverson as well as 1A Coach of the Year Chris Harris. Parrish plays at Sumiton Christian at 4 p.m. today.

Lynn is off to a hot start, winning tournament titles in the Lynn Invitational as well as the Wallace State-Hanceville Tournament.

The Bears missed out on the playoff last year, finishing third in the area behind both Parrish and Sumiton Christian. The three teams are in the same area again this season.

Two area teams are ranked in the baseball poll.

Walker County Baseball Tournament champion Oakman (11-3) is No. 6 in Class 2A while Addison (10-1) is ranked No. 3 in Class 1A.
