Dora tops Oakman for ninth win of season

Coming off a strong finish at the Oak Grove Tournament on Saturday, Dora continued its hot streak on Monday, shutting out Oakman in a match at Dora High School.

The Bulldogs won 25-9, 25-16, 25-14 to improve to 9-5 on the season.

For Dora, Madisen Bencko had eight kills and five aces, Larissa Steeley had six kills, Hannah Wilson had 17 assists and both Lindsey Johnson and Lydia Sanders had 15 digs.

Dora also won the JV match 25-19, 25-23. For the Bulldogs, Bailey Jett had five assists and Brooke Abbott had 15 digs and seven aces.

On Saturday, Dora finished 3-2 in the Oak Grove Tournament, falling to Calera twice.

Dora dropped its opener 24-26, 25-6, 15-13 to the Eagles. The Bulldogs bounced back with wins over Leeds (25-19, 25-16), Sylacauga (25-12, 25-19) and Jemison (25-21, 25-15) before losing to Calera for the second time (25-17, 25-19).

For Dora, Steeley had 22 kills and 13 aces on the day. Sanders added 37 kills and Wilson had 59 assists.

Steeley and Wilson made the All-Tournament Team.

Cordova wins match over Winfield

Cordova won its first area volleyball match of the season, sweeping the Winfield Pirates at Cordova High School on Monday.

Led by Faith Sims’ 21 kills and three blocks, Cordova earned a 25-18, 26-24, 26-24 victory.

Cordova (6-3) got 38 assists, 13 digs and an ace from Emily Wilson, Maleah Gilmore added 10 digs, Kaitlyn Barnes had seven digs, five kills and a block, Kara Hall had five digs, four kills and an ace, Randi Capps added seven kills, two digs and a block, Mabry Norris had three kills and two digs and Allie Bradford had three digs. Cordova hosts Hamilton in another area match beginning at 5 p.m. today.

Walker outlasts Thompson

The Walker Vikings improved to 13-5 on the season with a marathon 21-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-15, 15-13 victory at Thompson on Monday.

Sidney Cooper paced Walker with 18 kills, six digs, three aces and a block, Miranda Bruce had 13 kills, seven digs and two blocks, Jolee Dobbs had 36 assists, seven kills and five digs, Carlee Taylor added 14 digs and Maddie Harrell had five kills, five assists and five digs.

Walker also took second at the West Morgan Tournament on Saturday. The Vikings went 6-1 in the event, losing to Madison Academy in three sets in the championship match.

Walker hosts Mortimer Jordan and Ramsay on Thursday.
