As more than 700 local high school seniors graduate this weekend and prepare for college or the real world, I have accumulate some famous commencement quotes by which to live.

“When a director give you a line reading that doesn’t feel right for your character, nod and agree with him or her, then do it the way you know your character would do it. If you’re an actor, always be true to your character. If you’re not an actor, have character, and always be true to yourself… Whatever you do, wherever you go, do something real, make a real product, provide a real service, do something of value. Create something of beauty.”

— Robert De Niro at Bates

“You don’t actually have to build a rocket or go into space, but please take us somewhere. Please keep us moving. Push us. Lift us up. Make us better.”

— Brian Williams at George Washington University

“Death is very likely the single best invention of life. It’s life’s change agent; it clears out the old to make way for the new… Your time is limited so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice, heart and intuition.”

— Steve Jobs at Stanford

“Sometimes you find out what you are supposed to be doing by doing the things you are not supposed to do.”

— Oprah at Howard University

“Don’t just get involved. Fight for your seat at the table. Better yet, fight for a seat at the head of the table.”

— President Barack Obama at Barnard College

“Don’t ever confuse the two, your life and your work. The second is only part of the first.”

— Anna Quindlen at Villanova University

“Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.”

— Winston Churchill

“If you want to play a game, go to where it’s played and find a way to get in. Things happen when you get in the game.”

— Chris Matthews at Temple University

“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default.”

— JK Rowling at Harvard University

These are just a handful of notable quotes made by notable folks. Now, it’s my turn.

To the college-bound graduates, you are solely responsible for the outcome of your journey the next few years. Go to class! Be respectful of your surroundings! Do not take this opportunity for granted. Make your parents and community proud. Keep a smile on your face.
