The Dream Team is an all-inclusive sports program that offers baseball, soccer and flag football teams for participants of all ages and skill levels. The Field of Fright event is being held to help raise funds for additional equipment needed for the city’s George Lindsey Miracle Field, which will be the home for Dream Team baseball games.
“We’ve got a few more things that we need to get for the field, and this will help pay for them,” said Jennifer Smith, an organizer of the Field of Fright. “In the past, we have also used Field of Fright to fund scholarships for Dream Team.”
Smith said Field of Fright is open to the entire community. It will take place at Jasper’s Woods and Murphy fields from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. More than 25 organizations and businesses have signed up to sponsor a booth at the event. Smith said the booths will feature items such as a cake walk, a duck pond and other similar kid-friendly activities. She said groups can enter a booth by calling the Jasper Parks and Recreation Department at 205-384-6014.
“It’s free to sponsor a booth,” Smith said. “We want as many groups as possible to participate.”
Organizers will be asking for a $5 donation for anyone wanting to visit the booths at the event.
“No one will be turned away if they don’t have the money, but we are asking for a $5 donation,” she said.
Smith said children will also have the opportunity to kick a soccer ball past members of the Walker High School soccer team and run the bases of the miracle field with members of the WHS baseball squad.
“This will be our first chance to run around the miracle field. We are all so excited about that,” she said.
Smith said several food vendors will be at the Field of Fright, and organizers will also be selling “Bar-Boo-Q” bags for $5.
“We’ll have fun and food, but more than anything we just want this to be an event for the entire community,” Smith said. “We want people to put on their Halloween costumes and come down and join us for fun. This is a great way for our community to meet our players and volunteers and see what Dream Team is all about.”
