Hickoryland Bar-B-Q, which was owned by Myra Watkins and had been in business for more than 20 years, was declared a total loss.
Jasper firefighters were called out just after 10 p.m. Tuesday. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found the structure fully involved.
Jasper Fire Chief David Clark said Christmas morning that firefighters attempted an interior attack to battle the blaze, but were forced to take a defensive stand due to safety concerns.
“There was just too much fire and structural damage,” Clark said.
Clark said firefighters spent several hours fighting the fire.
“Our guys worked through the last hours of Christmas Eve and the early hours of Christmas morning, and they were cold and wet with ice hanging off their gear and equipment, but they did the job. I’m really proud of my guys for their hard work.”
Clark said Jasper Fire Marshal Alan Clark and Jasper police are working to try to determine what may have caused the fire.
