The recently retired former director of the Walker County Narcotics Enforcement Team died Monday afternoon after being involved in a single-car crash earlier in the day.

Paul Kilgore, 60, of Jasper, died at UAB Hospital in Birmingham at 4:01 p.m., according to Walker County Coroner J.C. Poe.

Poe said a car Kilgore was driving left the roadway on Coal Valley Road in the Townley community and struck several trees around 9 a.m. Monday. Poe said an autopsy has been ordered and the Alabama Department of Public Safety’s Traffic Homicide Division is currently investigating the crash.

“I have not been to the scene,” Poe said. “This is difficult for me because Paul and I have known each other, been friends and have worked with each other.”

Walker County Sheriff John Mark Tirey said he has contacted the Alabama Bureau of Investigation to also assist in investigating the incident.

Neither Poe nor Tirey could confirm reports that Kilgore may have also suffered a gunshot wound. Poe said preliminary autopsy results could be available within 24 to 48 hours.

Tirey announced Kilgore’s retirement from the Walker County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 30. Kilgore had more than 36 years of law enforcement service and had held several positions at the sheriff’s office, including most recently being director of Walker County NET, which was shut down by Tirey on Jan. 23.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Kilgore-Green Funeral Home.
