The Jasper Herb Society’s fourth annual Herb Day will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the 4 Seasons Garden Center on North Airport Road and will feature gardening demonstrations, door prizes and refreshments, as well as advice on growing fresh herbs from club members.
JHS member Nora Lane said a wide variety of locally grown herbs will be on sale during the event and a portion of the proceeds from the event will go to the Jasper Herb Society to help maintain the Herb Society’s Healing Garden located between the Walker Baptist Medical Center and the Walker Cancer Care Center in Jasper.
“We teamed up with the folks at the 4 Seasons Garden Center four years ago and the partnership has been a huge success,” Lane said. “Last year we were able to take the money we raised to add more plants to our Healing Garden out at the hospital.”
Lane said Joyce Knight, owner of the 4 Seasons Garden Center, and her staff do a wonderful job growing the herbs sold at the annual fundraiser in their greenhouses.
“Every time I walk in 4 Seasons it’s like walking into the Garden of Eden,” Lane said. “Joyce is also a member of the Jasper Herb Society and we enjoy working with her and her staff. They do a such wonderful job.”
Knight said she enjoys being a member of the Jasper Herb Society and having her business participate in the annual Herb Day.
“It’s sort of like being a part of a family. We meet and have dinner and enjoy each others company,” Knight said. “Our meetings are always fun and very informative. We learn to cook with herbs which is something I had been wanting to learn how to do.”
Knight said sharing what she has learned with others is one of the main things she enjoys about hosting the event at her nursery.
“We learn so much about herbs at our meetings, and our annual Herb Day is a way to teach others about how to grow herbs and use them in a variety of ways,” Knight said. “I can teach folks how to grow the herbs and our Herb Society members can teach them how to cook with them. It’s a perfect partnership.”
Knight said one of the things she would like to instill upon folks who would like to attend the fourth annual Herb Day this Saturday, would be to bring their own flower pot so they can create a potted container garden featuring herbs which would suit their cooking needs to set on their deck or porch.
“If you like to cook Italian, we can fix an arrangement of herbs in your pot that are used in Italian cooking. If you like to cook Mexican, we do an arrangement of herbs used in Hispanic cooking,” Knight said. “Then all you have to do is walk outside on your very own deck or porch and clip fresh herbs to use in your favorite recipe, instead of having to use the store bought variety.”
Knight said they will also be featuring other themed herb container gardens, as well as using fresh herbs in some of the refreshments that will be served during Saturday’s event, which will kick off a number of special events on gardening that will be held on weekends over the next six weeks at 4 Seasons Garden Center.
The Jasper Herb Society was formed in December 2000 and currently has 15 members.
The group meets the second Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Jasper.
