Gene Whalen, 79, of Gardendale, died Thursday, May 8, 2014, at St. Vincent’s Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Bell Sumiton Chapel with burial in Shanghi Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p,m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Whalen graduated from West Jefferson High School and attended Jefferson State Community College. He worked in the coal mines for 17 years and his last employment was with the U.S. Department of Labor, MSHA, as a federal coal mine inspector. His last years were spent in retirement and enjoying watching his grandchildren play football, baseball and softball. He was an avid University of Alabama fan attending many games with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Whalen; son, Sid Whalen and his wife, Riah; and grandchildren, Andrew, Jonathan, Savannah and Addie Whalen, all of Gardendale. You may sign an online register or express private condolences to the family at
