This fall, students at Sumiton Elementary/Middle School enchanted by the gymnastics competitions in the 2012 Olympics will have a new option for indulging those dreams, and parents will have a new afterschool care option once per week. Brasfield Gymnastics, owned by Andrew and Jana Brasfield, will offer gymnastics classes in one-hour blocks from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoons.

A portion of the proceeds from the lessons will go back to SEMS to be used for supplies or other school needs. This program has already been successfully implemented at three schools in Jefferson County.

“What we do is talk to the principals and then we go in and teach the classes in their gym with our equipment,” Jana Brasfield said.

Jana Brasfield has been teaching gymnastics since 1997 and opened the Brasfield Gymnastics location in Adamsville in 2006. She will continue to teach at the Adamsville location on Tuesday afternoons.

Brasfield believes this program is an advantage for students and parents because the students get to take a class they will enjoy and the parents don’t have to worry about rushing to get them to classes.

The classes are open to boys or girls from age four on up, although the training is more focused on the requirements of women’s gymnastics.

“We do gear towards the girls because we don’t have all the equipment that men’s gymnastics uses,” Jana Brasfield said.

Brasfield Gymnastics will be at SEMS registration on August 14, for anyone interested. For more information, visit www.wetumble.com or call (205)674-1515.
