Jasper Police Chief Connie Cooner Rowe said Lt. Justin Tidwell collided around 2 p.m. with another vehicle while responding to a call of an alleged gunman at a medical office.
The accident happened on Viking Drive between T.R. Simmons Elementary and Indiana Avenue.
Rowe, who was at a police chief’s conference in Montgomery Wednesday, said Tidwell was being treated in the emergency room at UAB Hospital Wednesday afternoon. She did not know his status at that time.
Two females were in the other vehicle involved in the crash. Their names were not available at press time, but Rowe said they did suffer injuries and were also taken by ambulance to UAB Hospital.
The Alabama State Troopers are investigating the crash, Rowe said.
While Jasper police were investigating the possible gunman and clearing the wreck scene, Rowe said several other law enforcement agencies, including the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, the Sumiton Police Department and the Parrish Police Department, volunteered to help respond to Jasper patrol calls.
“Evening shift is our busiest time, so that added help was appreciated,” she said.
Rowe said Jasper police are still investigating the call of an alleged gunman.
