James Thomas Chavis, born on July 13, 1941, died at his residence on Oct. 27, 2013.

Chavis was a highly honored Vietnam Veteran. He served his country for 4 1/2 years in the Vietnam War and received many awards and medals which were: National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Valorous Unit Award, Bronze Star Medal Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal W/60 Device, Air Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, one Silver Star, four Bronze Service Stars, Purple Heart and Vietnamese Cross. He was highly honored by his friends and family.

The family will receive friends today, Oct. 29, 2013, at 6 p.m. at Collins-Burke Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Collins-Burke Chapel, with burial at Alabama National Cemetery.

Chavis was preceded in death by his mother.

He is survived by his wife, Lessie Chavis; daughters, Judy Labas (John) of the Woodlands, Texas, Nancy Wilson of Hutto, Texas, and Crystal Mendoza (Emilio) of Logan; sons, Sean Green of Carbon Hill and Jeffrey Myers (Kimberly) of Haleyville; sister, Janie McDonald (Henry) of Carbon Hill; brother, Gaynes Lee Chavis (Linda); and 11 Grandchildren.
