Alabama Marine Police Officer John Williams said the name of the victim is being withheld until family members can be notified. Williams confirmed the man was a 37-year-old, white male from Jasper.
The drowning happened around 3:30 p.m. near Duncan Bridge. Williams said the man drowned after jumping out of a boat to swim in the lake.
“There were three guys in the boat, and one of them had problems after they jumped in to swim,” Williams said. “The other guys tried to hold him up but couldn’t keep him up.”
Williams said the water was approximately 80 to 90 feet in the area where the man went down.
Aaron Brown, Wes Brown, Tim Stockman and Charlie Boyer, all divers with the Smith Lake Task Force, were able to locate the victim around 8:10 p.m.
Williams said the incident is under investigation.
